Who We Are

PSI is a charitable organization run by volunteers. We support schools around the world that have made a commitment to creating and maintaining a culture of peace.

Working with school communities – educators, students and parents – Peaceful Schools International provides resources, promotes peer mediation, and encourages schools to develop their own peace plans and activities.

Currently, we have more than 350 member schools. Approximately two thirds of our members are in North America, with the rest in countries including Finland, Cameroon, Jamaica, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Serbia, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

PSI relies on a network of volunteer Regional Coordinators who provide support to schools in their local geographic areas. PSI is governed by a Board of Directors and an International Advisory Board. PSI’s founder, Hetty van Gurp, serves as the President of the Board of Directors.

PSI’s Board of Directors

The PSI Board of Directors provides input in a variety of ways. The most important role of the Board members is discussion of future direction, approval of items put forth at the Annual General Meeting and expert input in decision-making. The board of directors is composed of:

Heather Harris – President
Principal, Kingston and District School, Annapolis Valley Regional School Board
Joe Morrison –

Principal, Oxford School
Greg Albers – Treasurer
Teacher, Halifax Regional School Board
Emily Anderson – Secretary
Alexis Allen

President, Nova Scotia Teachers Union
Bridget Brownlow

Conflict Resolution Advisor, Saint Mary’s University
Terry Kelly

Singer, songwriter, motivational speaker
Clare Levin

Research Consultant, Research Power Inc.
Peter Twohig
Executive Director, Gorsebrook Research Institute
Hetty van Gurp

Lynn Winter
Principal, Champlain Elementary School

Regional Coordinators:

Without this network of dedicated volunteers, PSI would not be a position to provide such widespread support to its member schools. Regional Coordinators support schools in their geographic regions. Most PSI Regional Coordinators have attended an intensive four-day training session at PSI Head Office.
