PSI hires new Executive Director

Posted: February 1st, 2010

Almost ten years have passed since PSI registered its first member school. Now, 300 members later, we have an exciting announcement to make. PSI’s Board of Directors has hired Clare Levin as the new Executive Director of PSI starting officially on March 1, 2010.

Clare already has a strong connection and history with PSI. She has been a member of the PSI Board of Directors for the past few years; she recently spent four months in Sierra Leone working as an intern on the PSI and cdpeace joint peace education project; and, last summer Clare worked as the PSI Program Manager. Clare has a wide range of experience in the field of humanitarianism and activism, having worked with Oxfam, the Atlantic Canada Sustainability Initiative and Genuine Progress Index (GPI) Atlantic. She is currently finishing the requirements for a Master of Arts in International Affairs at Carleton University.

“What does this mean?” you may be wondering. As Executive Director, Clare will be handling the day-to-day PSI responsibilities, including working with all member schools and managing funded projects (such as our new project in Pakistan). Working closely with the PSI Board of Directors, Clare will assume responsibility for strengthening the capacity of PSI to support its members and diversify its scope. Over the years, we have had many ideas for exciting new projects that would support our members in building a culture of peace in their schools, but were limited in our capacity to implement them. Having a full-time, paid staff person will now allow us to begin to put some of these ideas into action, so stay tuned for new activities, programs, and training opportunities!

PSI’s founder and the person who nurtured PSI for the past ten years, Hetty van Gurp, will continue in her role as President of the Board of PSI. She will also continue to be involved in the monthly ideas, the newsletters and other PSI promotional activities. While PSI is and will always be an important part of Hetty’s life, she is looking forward to having more time for new activities, especially spending time with her new grandson.
